Formula E: Jeff Cornils crashes out early at Toronto

Jeff Cornils picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Formula E Series Presented by Twitter career in the Season 2 Toronto ePrix at the Streets of Toronto when his #18 Cafe de Colombia was involved in a single-car crash after 3 of the 9 laps.

The finish came in his 5th career start. In the SCRL Formula E Series, it's the 1st for car #18 and the 7th from a crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 6th for the #18 and the 232nd from a crash. Cornils was one of the nine rookies that signed up to complete in the second season for the Formula E Series and was looking to make a name for himself, but found that the cars were tough to handle, finishing 16th in his debut at Adelaide. A 3rd at Shanghai in the next race would be followed with a 8th at Vancouver before finishing 10th in the last round at Monaco.

The entry list for Toronto was bumped up to 23 cars as 10 time SCRL race winner and Season 2 SCRL Tim Hortons Canadian Series Champion Chris Kyle, owner of the YouTube league ISCR, was tabbed to make his FE debut, driving a one-off for the Dreyer & Reinbold racing team in their #22 Comfort Revolution / Brantley Gilbert at Kyle's home track.

On race day, Cornils rolled off 3rd while starting in the final spot was the #20 Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka of TJ Dent, a position that Dent would hold through the first lap as the first caution would come out for the #41 ABC Supply Co. AJ Jones, who spun out in Turn 5. During the caution flag, Cornils reported to his team of having a flat left front tire and was forced to make a pit stop, dropping the #18 into last on Lap 2. When the green flag came back out, Cornils was trailing the field as he entered Turn 7 with too much speed and crashed hard into the tire barrier, bringing out the second caution of the day, ending Cornils day.

Further up the track another crash would break out as leader Adelaide last-place finisher the #28 DHL of Anthony Stewart once again had bad luck strike as he too went too wide in the turn, hitting a tire barrier as well and knocking him out of the race, having been scored on the same lap as Cornils, but was ranked higher due to being higher in position at the time of the crash.

Just three laps later, the #9 Target of Mikali Kose crashed in the same turn as Cornils, and just three turns later, the aforementioned #41 of AJ Jones would also crash into a tire barrier, bringing out the final caution of the day and ending both drivers day.

Rounding out the Bottom Five on the same lap as the race leaders was the #14 ABC Supply Co. of Joe Jefferson.
