Tony Newman picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL Red Bull Formula One Series career in the Season 2 Canadian Grand Prix at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park when his #21 Haas F1 Team fell out with gearbox problems after completing 7 of the 8 laps.
The finish, which came in his 5th career start, was his first on the circuit since the Grand Prix of Germany at the Hockenheimring when he was involved in a multi-car crash without completing any of the 7 laps, 2 races ago. In the SCRL Red Bull Formula One Series, it's the 4th for car #21 and the 1st for gearbox issues. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 18th for the #21 and the 10th for gearbox issues. After trailing the field at Hockenheimring, Newman was looking to rebound in the next round and finished 14th at Zandvoort.
On race day, Newman rolled off 20th while starting in the final spot was the #11 Sahara Force India F1 Team of Trey Wright. As the green flag waved, Wright would remain in the final spot up until Turn 6 when he knocked the #9 Sauber F1 Team of Carter Friesen into the last spot. Friesen would remain in the final spot through the lone caution of the day and was trailing the field with two laps to go when Newman, who at this point, had moved up to 18th spot when coming off Turn 10, his car began to start smoking as Newman pulled to the inside of the track, having to limp back around the entire 2.459-mile of the track before pulling into the garage as the field took the white flag, Newman's crew discovered the gearbox had broken.
Rounding out the Bottom Five were: 21st was the aforementioned #11 of Trey Wright, 20th for the third straight race was the #19 Williams Martini Racing of Patrick Smith, 19th was the aforementioned #9 of Carter Friesen and 18th was the #5 Scuderia Ferrari of Richard Torres.
