The finish, which came in Smith's 12th series start. Coming into the West Series, Smith had yet to make a mark in his SCRL career, Smith finished 4th in his series debut at Phoenix and despite not having any wins after eleven rounds, 5 Top 5's and 7 Top 10's had Smith leading the point standings as the West Series raced for the final time on the short tracks, this time at Salem.
On race day, Pearson would roll off pit road starting in 28th, while starting last on the field was the #21 Rockwell / Golden Gate Meat / Bay Bio Diesel Chevrolet driven by Von Kasier but by the time the field had completed the first lap, Willow Springs last-place finisher the #14 Cooks / Holleran's Performance Toyota of Ryan Bowyer would lose ground with the field when chaos broke out in Turn 1 as a multi-car wreck would break out with Smith unable to slow down in time as his car was damaged beyond repair and would lock up his first last place finish.
The remaining bottom five would be filled up quickly as the four other drivers would also be involved in the same second lap crash: 28th was the aforementioned #14 of Ryan Bowyer, 27th was Iowa last-place finisher the #2 WestWorld Computers Chevrolet of AJ Jones, 26th was the #12 unsponsored Toyota of Real Mentemalo and 25th the #5 Bay Bio Diesel / Johnnie Walker Chevrolet of Richard Torres.
With one race to go, Mike Pearson has a one last-place finish over Oscar Isaac, Kurt Trenchermen, Ryan Bowyer, Jason Larker, Steve Larker, AJ Jones, Dexter Black, Alejandro Yepez, Mastello Polla and Scott Smith. If anyone new finishes last, Pearson would win the title outright.
