West: Camshaft problem makes Mike Pearson first person to fail to complete a lap in a West Series race; takes lead with two races to go

Mike Pearson picked up the 2nd last-place finish of his SCRL CatDog Pro Series West career in Sunday's Western Auto Texas World Shootout at the Texas World Speedway when his #6 Sunrise Ford / Lucas Oil / Eibach Ford fell out with camshaft problems without completing any of the 25 laps.

The finish, which came in Pearson's 11th series start, was his second of the season, his first in a West Series race since November 11, 2017, when he was involved in a multi-car wreck after 2 laps of the NAPA Auto Parts 150 at the Evergreen Speedway, two races ago. With two races to go, Pearson holds a one last-place finish lead over nine other drivers meaning that if Pearson finishes last in the next round, he will lock up the championship with one race to go.

After his first career last place finish at Evergreen, Pearson looked to Kern County to rebound but a lackluster race and a 23rd place finish placed him 17th in points, mathematically eliminated from winning the championship but was hoping his luck would turn around at the legendary superspeedway in College Station, Texas.

On race day, Pearson would roll off pit road starting in 20th, while starting last on the field was the #30 unsponsored Dodge driven by Daniel Bouchard but as drivers rolled off the pit lane, Pearon's car began to smoke and not wanting to put any oil on the track, Pearson made the sharp left turn into the garage, his day done before the green flag could even fly.

The remaining bottom five would be filled up by lap 3 as a multi-car wreck would break out in turn 2 on the second lap: 28th was Willow Springs last-place finisher the #14 Cooks / Holleran's Performance Toyota of Ryan Bowyer, 27th was Fontana last-place finisher the #36 PMC / Health Bridge Imaging Toyota of Jason Larker, 26th went to the #12 unsponsored Toyota of Real Mentemalo and rounding out the bottom five was the #99 Bad Piggies Toyota of Marcos Yepez.
