Whelen Southern: Joe Jefferson gets 5th career last-place finish after early spin at Caraway

Joe Jefferson picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Snap-On Tools Whelen Southern Series career in last Thursday's the SCRL Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 at the Caraway Speedway when his #04 WTQR / Foothill Ford completed all 30 laps under power.

The finish came in his 10th career start. In the SCRL Snap-On Tools Whelen Southern Series, it's the 1st for car #04 and the 9th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 6th for the #04 and the 139th for running at the finish.

Before signing up for the first ever Whelen Southern Series, Joe had already proven he deserved to be in the SCRL, having picked up eight career wins in various series, as well as the first driver to win an LCQ(Last Chance Qualifier) and then go on to win the main event when he won at Langley in Season 1 of the SCRL Wrangler Jeans Busch Grand National Series. Joe finished 10th in his series debut at Caraway, 18th in the second trip, before scoring three straight 7th place finishes in the third and fourth trips to Caraway and then at Bowman Gray. A finish of 16th at Martinsville and another 7th at the first Ace event motivated Joe to do better in the return trip, as Joe won the second ever event at Ace for his 9th career win. Win #10 wasn't far behind as he would led all 15 laps at Caraway and was looking to become only the third driver in league history to win three in a row since Bulldog 67(S1 NASCAR Legends Series at Bowman Gray, Darlington and Richmond) and Nick Kennedy(Season 1 SCRL Formula One Series at Circuit of the Americas, Suzuka and Shanghai).

On race day, Joe would roll off starting in the 18th spot while first Caraway last-place finisher the #71 Vista-Pro Automotive Chevrolet of Jim Marks rolled off from the final spot, a position he would hold till lap 4 when third Caraway last-place finisher the #06 Indy 3000 Fast Lube / WRS / Makel Chevrolet of Colin Dryburgh entered the battle, but his stay was short lived as he knocked second Ace last-place finisher the #16 Diversified Metals Chevrolet Chris Kyle back to the final spot on Lap 7. It was during this time that Joe Jefferson had worked his way up to 14th, when he was spun coming off of Turn 4 by the #4 DMC Auto Exchange Chevrolet of Chase McDowell, knocking Joe to the final spot on Lap 10.

Joe would remain in the final spot till Lap 17 when the #28 Ramar-Hall / Haydt Excavating of Trey Wright joined the battle but his stay in the final spot lasted one lap as he knocked Joe back on Lap 18. Joe would then pass #14 Kernersville Motorsports Dodge of Ty Dent back to the final spot on Lap 19 and he trailed till Lap 25 when Ty knocked his brother the #041 Ty Dent Motorsports Dodge of TJ Dent back to last on Lap 25, who trailed until two laps to go when Joe took last once again, a position he would remain till the Checkered Flag.

The remaining Bottom Five were; 19th the #041 of TJ Dent, 18th the #16 of Chris Kyle, 17th the #28 of Trey Wright and 16th the #41 of Ty Dent.
