Throwback IndyCar: Luke Rainey becomes first driver to trail a IndyCar race at Walt Disney World

Luke Rainey picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL IZOD IndyCar Series career in the Season 1 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World at the Walt Disney World Speedway when his #81 completed all 10 laps under power.

The finish came in his 1st career start. Rainey was one of thirty six drivers to sign up for the open wheel series and was looking to make a name for himself in the SCRL's newest series. Due to Walt Disney not big enough to fit all 36 cars, a LCQ(Last Chance Qualifier was held) and eight drivers battling for three spots.

On race day, Rainey would roll off starting 1st while the #34 Scandia / Xcel / Royal Purple of AJ Jones started in the final spot. The #78 of Joe Jefferson would trail for the first lap, before the #84 of Chakat Whitelion took last on Lap 3 and kept the final spot till Lap 7 when the #34 of AJ Jones retook the spot and was trailing the field when just before the white flag, Rainey went wide in Turn 3 and smacked the wall, spinning out on the frontstretch with Jones, bringing out the caution that ended the race and gave Rainey the last-place finish.

The remaining Bottom Five finished on the same lap as the race leaders: finishing 35th was the #34 of AJ Jones, 34th was the #38 of Cole Nixey, finishing 33rd was the #30 Quaker State / Menards of Dan Weldon and finishing 32nd was the #84 A.J. Foyt Enterprises of Chakat Whitelion.

Luke Rainey would go winless in his first season in the IndyCar Series, with only a best finish of 9th at Indianapolis. Overall, Rainey's career in the SCRL was a success, picking up three career wins as well as scoring multiple SCRLASTCAR finishes. He hasn't competed in a SCRL sanctioned race for several months now.
