Whelen: Riley Spurlytube finishes last at Thompson due to broken header; championship battle set between Gitirokh and Kennedy at Martinsville

Riley Spurlytube picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series career in the World Series at the Thompson Speedway when his #28 Fuel Carrier Corp. Chevrolet fell out with header problems after completing 3 of 25 laps.

The finish came in his 28th career start, was his first on the circuit since December 5 2018, the Genesee Twin 50s - Race 2 at the Holland International Speedway where he was involved in a multi-car crash after completing 3 of 20 laps, 13 races ago. In the SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series, it's the 2nd for car #28 and the 1st for header issues. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 10th for the #28 and the 16th for header issues.

After getting his first last-place finish in the series, Spurlytube rebounded in the next round at Riverhead finishing 5th. In his 17th career start, Spurlytube finally broke through, taking the lead with two laps to go and winning the series first race at Catamount, his first win in the Whelen Series and the 12th overall in his career. A 10th at Star and 3rd Thompson, 18th in the second Waterford event, a 5th in the 3rd Riverhead event, 10th in the 3rd Stafford event, 9th in the fourth Thompson race, 6th at Pocono, 23rd at Shangri-La, 22nd at Oxford before finishing 16th in the last round at Stafford.

On race day, Spurlytube rolled off starting 20th while first Stafford last-place finisher the #50 SMG Motoring Chevrolet of Samet Ozkan started in the final spot for the second race in a row, but his stay would last only a few turns before two-time last-place finisher the #42 Patterson Farm / NAPA / Spafco Chevrolet of Eddie Wycombe and Spurlytube both spun out in Turn 3 bringing out the first caution with Wycombe trailing the field for the first two laps. While running under caution, Spurlytube's car began to smoke as he pulled to the apron of the track, into the pits and then into the garage, Spurlytube's team looked over the car and found that the header was broken, ending his night early.

The remaining drivers finished the race on the same lap as the race leaders; 24th was third New Egypt last-place finisher the #88 Buzz Chez Chevrolet / GT Vodka Chevrolet of Dexter Black, 23rd was Shangri-La last-place finisher the #09 Riverhead Building Supply Chevrolet of Kyle Hunter, 22nd was the #0 Stakey's Pumpkins / Jessup Chevrolet of Carter Friesen and 21st was the #71 Draco / Purple Spring / Fluidyne Chevrolet of Daniel Bouchard.

With one race left to go at Martinsville, the battle for the SCRLASTCAR Championship is down to two drivers, Danyal Gitirokh and Nick Kennedy. With Gitirokh having one more last-place finish, finishing last would give him the championship, but if Kennedy finished last, Kennedy would win by having more Bottom 5's. If anyone other then Gitirokh or Kennedy finishes last, the championship will go to Gitirokh.
