Whelen: Blown Engine prevents Kyle Hunter from completing a lap at Shangri-La; becomes 5th driver to fail to complete a lap in series history

Kyle Hunter picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series career in the Southern Tier 200 at the Shangri-La Motor Speedway when his #09 Riverhead Building Supply Chevrolet fell out with engine problems without completing any of the 20 laps.

The finish came in his 25th career start. In the SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series, it's the 1st for car #09 and the 4th for engine issues. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 3rd for the #09 and the 35th for engine issues.

Evan is one of several drivers who had tasted brief success in the SCRL, having one career win, in Season 1 of the SCRL CatDog Pro Series East at South Boston and was looking to make a name for himself in the Whelen Series since he hadn't competed in the original series when it was created in 2014. In his series debut, Kyle finished 11th in the first Thompson race, 14th in the next round at Martinsville, 6th in the first Stafford race, 22nd in the second Martinsville race, 19th in the first ever dirt race in series history at New Egypt, 22nd at Waterford, 18th in the second New Egypt race, 17th at Spencer, 9th at Riverhead, 10th at Twin State, 17th at Stafford, 9th at Thompson, 11th in the third event at New Egypt.

In the 14th race of the season, Evan scored his series best finish, a 4th in the first event at Holland, 22nd in the second Holland race, before in the next event Kyle improved on his career best by scoring a runner up at Riverhead. A 14th at Catamount, 4th at Star, before scoring his 2nd runner up finish at Thompson, 17th at Waterford, 7th at Riverhead, 11th at Stafford a 22nd at Thompson and finally in his 24th career start, Evan picked up his second career win at the series first ever race at Pocono in the last round.

On race day, Evan was scheduled to roll off starting 17th while starting last was Twin State last-place finisher the #48 A-Best Forklift Chevrolet of Bafode Sacko. As soon as the command was given, Evan's car began to start smoking and he drove around the apron of the track before pulling onto pit road and then into the garage, his team looking and finding that the engine was beyond repair, the car officially retired by Lap 2.

Finishing 24th was Catamount last-place finisher the #43 Supreme Mfg. Co. Chevrolet of Marko Tellez, who also made a trip to pit road before the green came out and he lost a lap early, unable to get it back due to no cautions coming out.

The remaining Bottom Five finished on the same lap as the race leaders: 23rd was second Holland last-place finisher the #28 Fuel Carrier Corp. Chevrolet of Riley Spurlytube, 22nd was first Riverhead last-place finisher the #99 Gearhart Chevrolet of Joshua Rush and 21st was first Waterford last-place finisher the #1 DMC Auto Exchange Chevrolet of Anthony Lopez
