Whelen: Danyal Gitirokh gets 4th last-place finish of the season at Thompson; takes SCRLASTCAR Championship lead with 6 races to go

Danyal Gitirokh picked up the 4th last place finish of his SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series career in the Winston 300 at the Thompson Speedway when his #57 M-M Stone Chevrolet completed all 30 laps under power.

The finish came in his 23rd career start, was his first on the circuit since January 7, the Miller 200 at the Riverhead Raceway where he was involved in a multi-car crash after completing 8 of 20 laps, 2 races ago. In the SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series, it's the 4th for car #57 and the 10th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 5th for the #57 and the 143rd for running at the finish.

For Danyal Gitirokh he has struggled in the SCRL, having yet to score a win and in 21 starts he had already picked up three last place finishes. In his last race, he finished 14th at Stafford as for the fourth time of the season, the series returned to Thompson, a track where Gitirokh has a best finish of 7th in the last race at the track.

On race day, Gitirokh rolled off starting 4th while the #12 Sherry Cup Chevrolet of Oreius Centaur rolled off from the final spot, a position he wouldn't hold for long as Oreius knocked the #09 Riverhead Building Supply Chevrolet of Kyle Hunter to the final spot, but Hunter knocked Oreius back to last on Lap 2. Oreius however wasn't there long once again as he knocked third Stafford last-place finisher the #10 Bilsom Safety Chevrolet of Sammy Sabre Jr. to the final spot on Lap 3, before Sabre knocked Kyle back to last on Lap 4. On Lap 6, first Riverhead last-place finisher the #99 Gearhart Chevrolet of Joshua Rush took the final spot and held it till Lap 9 when Sabre Jr. returned to last briefly on Lap 9 before Kyle Hunter again took it on Lap 10.

Sabre would reclaim last two laps later on Lap 12 and kept it till Lap 15 when the #38 P.A.S.E. Corporation Chevrolet of Jack Lagasee took the final spot on Lap 15, before Lagasee knocked Sabre back to the final spot one lap later on Lap 16. Sabre then began to trail the field each lap, had he not gained a spot for the remaining 14 laps, he would have become only the second driver in series history to get back-to-back last-place finishes after Nick Kennedy did earlier in the season in the second Stafford event and the second Thompson race. Luckily for Sabre, he was able to knock Gitirokh into the final spot with seven laps to go and it was Gitirokh who made history.

The remaining Bottom Five were: 24th was the #10 of Sammy Sabre Jr., 23rd was #121 of Ryan Pritchard, 22nd was the #09 of Kyle Hunter and 21st was the #12 of Oreius Centaur.
