Throwback IndyCar: Cole Nixey goes for a wild ride at Phoenix

Cole Nixey picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL IZOD IndyCar Series career in the Season 1 Dura-Lube 200 at the Phoenix International Raceway when his #38 Service Central was involved in a multi-car crash after 1 of the 32 laps.

The finish came in his 2nd career start.

Cole at this point in his career was just starting to make a name for himself in the SCRL and was looking forward to making more success in the SCRL's IndyCar Series. Cole's debut wouldn't be what the driver was expecting, finishing a disappointing 34th at Walt Disney World.

On race day, Nixey would roll off starting in the final spot and it wouldn't take long for the battle for last to end. As the field entered Turn 3, the #68 of Alexander Rowe and the #7 McAfee / Bing of Brian Fox made contact and crashed in Turn 3, bringing out the first of three yellow flags. As the field raced back onto the frontstretch, more chaos broke out as the #78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy / Lotus of Joe Jefferson was hit by the #6 TrueCar of Colin Dryburgh, starting a chain reaction that would block the track. Nixey would try to avoid the crash but was hit from behind and nailed the #14 ABC Supply Co. of Tony Newman, sending both cars for a wild ride, flipping over three times each before landing on all four wheels. By the time the smoke had cleared, Nixey was done for the day having only completed the one lap while the #98 Barracuda Networks of Max Anderson and the aforementioned #14 of Tony Newman would limp around the track before pulling into the garage at the start of the second lap.

The remaining Bottom Five would also be victims of a crash, coming on Lap 14; 33rd was the #28 DHL / Sun Drop Citrus Soda of Dinkdrinker and 32nd was the #4 National Guard of John Arndt, who was barely able to limp back around to complete 15 laps before the car stalled on pit road.
