CUP: Early spin gives AJ Jones the first last-place finish of his cup career at Monroe

AJ Jones picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Grand National Series career in Race 8 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds when his #91 Plymouth completed all 20 laps under power.

The finish came in his 8th career series start. In the SCRL Grand National Series, it's the 1st for car #91 and the 8th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 1st for the #91 and 312th for running at the finish.

Entering the second ever cup season, AJ has been competing in the SCRL for several years and has raked up six career wins in various series and was looking to bring that same success in his first ever cup season, signing up to driver a full season. AJ would finish 20th in his first ever start at the Daytona Beach Road Course, 25th at Charlotte, 13th at Langhorne, 26th at Martinsville, before in his 5th career start, AJ would lead all twenty laps and would score his first career cup win and become one of five drivers to win in all three major series in the SCRL. A finish of 12th at Vernon would be followed by a 15th place in the last round at Dayton.

The entry list for the sixth time this season would be only the part-time drivers, as the track wasn't big enough to fit all the full and part-time drivers.

In qualifying, Nick Kennedy would score his second career pole with a time of 26.141 seconds. AJ would have a decent qualifying lap around the half mile dirt track, posting a time of 26.392, only 0.251 seconds off Kennedy's time, it would place AJ in 11th. Starting last in the race was Dayton last-place finisher the #2 Cadillac of Tyler Mills, who posted a time of 26.834, 0.693 seconds behind Kennedy's pole winning time.

On race day, Mills would struggle around the bumpy and rough half mile track, trailing for the first five laps before knocking the #14 Plymouth of Chris Kyle fell back to last on Lap 6, but Kyle's stay in last was only for one lap as the battle for last one end one lap later. At this point in the race, Jones had fallen back to 19th and was racing with the #42 Petty Special Plymouth of Dallas Jordan, as the two locked fenders, Jones was spun to the inside of the track, his car barely avoiding a pole before regaining control of his car, taking last on Lap 7. Jones would try his hardest over the next thirteen laps to not finish last for the first time in his cup career, but the distance between himself and the car in front of him was too great, as he finished five car lengths behind the car in front.

Rounding out the Bottom Five were drivers were; 29th was the aforementioned #14 of Chris Kyle, 28th was the #2 of Tyler Mills, 27th was the #65 of Brandon Mayhew and 26th was points leader the #98 of Myron Felder.
