BUSCH: Early Oil Leak at North Wilkesboro gives Ty Dent his first Busch Series last-place finish

Ty Dent picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Busch Grand National Series career in Monday's Coca-Cola 300 at the North Wilkesboro Speedway when his #54 Burger King Buick completed 39 of the 40 laps under power.

The finish occurred in his 24th career series start. In the SCRL Busch Series, it's the 1st for car #54 and the 39th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 6th for the #54 and 306th for running at the finish.

Ty is one of the Dent family members that races here in the SCRL, with TJ, now Sebastian LeNoble, winning the SCRL ARCA Midget Championship, while Ty has visited victory lane three times himself and was looking to find success in his first ever attempt in the Busch Series. Ty's Busch series season started off on the wrong end, being caught up in the race's second "Big One and finished a disappointing 23rd, 17th at Richmond, 12th at Rockingham before scoring his first Top 10, a 10th, in the first Hickory event. A 26th at Martinsville would be followed by a 17th at Darlington, 16th at Orange County, scoring two more Top 10s, a 9th at Nashville and a 10th at Langley before struggling to a 25th at Milwaukee Mile and 34th at Dover. A career best 6th at Charlotte would be followed by a 8th at South Boston, 22nd in the second Hickory event, 20th in the second Orange County event, 18th in the second South Boston event, 8th at the 3rd Orange County event, before scoring his best finish of his Busch career, a 4th at the third Hickory event. A 9th at IRP, 23rd at the second Langley event, 14th at the third South Boston event, 27th at Bristol, 17th at the second Darlington before finishing 7th in the last round at Richmond.

The entry list for the 14th time this season would have both full and part-time drivers racing against each other as the series traveled to North Wilkesboro, North Carolina for the series third ever stop at the legendary 0.625 mile short track.

In qualifying, Muhammad Zain Abdullah would score his first career busch pole with a lap time of 21.584 seconds. While Ty would struggle in qualifying, posting a time of 21.943 seconds, 0.359 seconds behind Abdullah's pole winning time, placing him last on the field.

On race day, Ty's stay in last was brief as he knocked the #26 Jackson & Johnson Oldsmobile of Nick Kennedy into last as Kennedy trailed for the first lap before the next time around he would knock two time last-place finisher the #48 Williford Prod. Builders Pontiac of Matt McIntyre into last on Lap 2, a spot he would hold when the battle for last came to a surprising end. While running in 36th, Ty's car began to slow coming off Turn 2, as he pulled to the inside of the track and was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop, with Dent reporting of his crew of no oil pressure as he took the final spot as he crossed the line on Lap 3. Once he made it to his stall, the crew looked under the hood and discovered a oil leak, as they quickly tried to repair it before sending Ty back out onto the track, already one circuit behind, as his crew planned to work on the car more once a caution came out. It turned out that in a surprising fact, there would be no cautions, with the event running green for the first time in history, and with no other driver having problems, Dent was the lone driver a lap down when the checkered flag waved.

Rounding out the Bottom Five were drivers who finished on the same lap as the race leaders: 39th was the #7 Wrangler Jeans Oldsmobile of Blaise Zebrataur, 38th was third Orange County last-place finisher the #5 Advance Auto Parts Buick of Chakat Whitelion, 37th was the #87 Domino's Pizza Chevrolet of Dilan Ebrahimian and 36th was second Orange County last-place finisher the #42 Benefit Development Pontiac of Jake Thomas.
