BUSCH: Mid-race wreck makes Nick Kennedy only retiree at Hickory; gets second last-place finish of the season

Nick Kennedy picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL Wrangler Jeans Busch Grand National Series career on Wednesday's Goody's 200 at the Hickory Speedway when his #19 Gardiner's Auto Parts Pontiac was involved in a multi-car accident after 10 of the 20 laps.

The finish occurred in his 50th career series start, was his first on the circuit since March 14, 2017 at Martinsville, where he was also taken out in a multi-car crash after 7 of the 50 laps, 16 races ago. In the SCRL Busch Series, it's the 2nd for car #19 and the 23rd for reason by crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 8th for Car #19 and 183rd for reason by crash.

Ever since trailing the field at Martinsville, Kennedy's best finish is a 4th in the last round at South Boston. Entering Hickory, Kennedy also continues to look for his first series victory, having a record of 0-49 entering this race as Kennedy was looking to finally get rid of the goose egg.

On race day, Kennedy would roll off the field in 5th while starting last was spring South Boston last-place finisher the #15 Wrangler Jeans Pontiac of Chris Kyle as the field took the green, but he wouldn't be there long. The #9 unsponsored Pontiac of Zachary Fitzwater would fall back to last after completing one lap before chaos broke out on the backstretch as the #22 A.G. Dillard Pontiac of Danyal Gitirokh would get severe damage on his right front as he limped back to the pits, his crew working hard to get their driver back out and prevent him from getting his first last-place finish in his 21st start.

Luckly for Gitirokh, his crew only lost one lap due to repairs and get back on track as he would remain in last place before Summer South Boston last-place finisher the #1 New Con Leasing Pontiac of Carter Friesen would drop back to last on Lap 11, having gotten damage himself in the second caution, which involved ten cars, one of them Kennedy, who slammed into two cars before hitting the #95 Metro Pontiac of Sebastian Torres in the side door, nearly flipping Torres. Kennedy limped around the track before pulling into the garage, his car listed as "Out" by lap eleven, but didn't take the final spot until one lap later on Lap 12.

32nd went to the aforementioned #1 of Carter Frisen, who finished 3 laps down to race winner Truttle. 31st went to spring Hickory last-place finisher the #62 1 Stop Food Store Pontiac of Marcos Yepez, 30th went to the previous South Boston last-place finisher the #28 Skoal Bandit Pontiac of Jack Lagasee and rounding out the Bottom Five in 29th was Jack's brother the #11 J.W. Hunt Produce Pontiac of Al Lagasee, all of whom were two laps behind the race winner.
