Jay Jefferson picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL Wrangler Jeans Busch Grand National Series career on Monday's Mello Yello 200 at the Orange County Speedway when his #3 unsponsored Pontiac was involved in a single-car accident after 1 of the 20 laps.
The finish occurred in his 48th career series start, was his first on the circuit since April 6, 2017 at Martinsville when he suffered camshaft problems after 6 of the 50 laps, 44 races ago. In the SCRL Busch Series, it's the 1st for car #3 and the 21st for crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 8th for Car #3 and 181st for crash.
Jay Jefferson is one half of the Jefferson Family, along with his brother Joe, both drivers have tasted success in the SCRL, with both drivers having scored eight career wins. Joe became the first to visit victory lane in the busch series when he won at Hickory in season one before he would repeat by becoming the first driver to win a Last Chance Qualifier(LCQ) and the main event on his way to scoring win #2 at Langley on his way to finishing 23rd in points. Meanwhile, Jay struggled all season long, failing to score a victory and finished 28th in points. Entering Season 2, Jay was determined to get that first win, and it was in the eighth event of the season, Jay finally broke through, scoring the win at Greenville-Pickens while Joe has struggle this season as he leads the SCRLASTCAR championship battle after last-place finishes at Langley and Bristol.
On race day, Jay would roll off the field in 17th while starting last was #97 unsponsored Pontiac of Joshua Rush, who had won the last event at Orange County. Rush was trailing the field as the green came out and down the backstretch when chaos broke out in turn three as the lack of grip on the track caused drivers to slide out of control. Jefferson was able to avoid the spinning cars, but misjudged the closing rate as he slammed into the pit road wall, his car destroyed and done for the day.
The remaining Bottom Five was filled by drivers who also struggled at Orange County; 32nd went to March Hickory last-place finisher the #62 1 Stop Food Store Pontiac of Marcos Yepez, who got damage in the same wreck as he limped around another lap to be scored higher. 31st went to the #17 Aladdin Industries Pontiac of Sammy Sabre Jr., who was able to limp around and passed Yepez by a few feet to be scored one spot higher. 30th went to South Boston last-place finisher the #1 New Con Leasing Pontiac of Carter Friesen, he himself a victim of a single car crash on Lap 7 and finishing 29th was the #95 Metro Pontiac of Sebastian Torres, who was taken out in another crash on Lap 13.
