BUSCH: Early Header problems gives Maria Valera third last-place finish of the season at Langley; takes lead in SCRLASTCAR championship battle

Maria Valera picked up the 3rd last place finish of her SCRL Wrangler Jeans Busch Grand National Series career on Monday's Virginia 200 at the Langley Speedway when her #63 Ashby Sheet Metal & Machine Pontiac fell out with header problems after completing 6 of the 20 laps.

The finish occurred in her 22nd career series start, was her first on the circuit since April 11, 2018 at Dover, where she was taken out in a multi-car crash after 1 of the 40 laps, 12 races ago. In the SCRL Busch Series, it's the 5th for car #63 and the 4th for reason by header. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 5th for Car #63 and 14th for reason by header.

Ever since trailing the field at Dover, Valera's best finish has been a 6th at Hickory but she has struggled to just stay inside the Top 30 in points, with the high point of her season coming in her third career start when she scored her first career busch series win entering the season's second trip to Langley where in the previous event she finished 31st.

On race day, Kennedy would roll off the field in 13th while starting last for the second race in a row was South Boston last-place finisher the #15 Wrangler Jeans Pontiac of Chris Kyle, a spot he would keep for only two turns before the #6 Mason Day Paving Chevrolet of Henry Urchman took last, trailing the field for the length of the first caution but while running in 13th, Valera's car began to smoke as she quickly pulled to the inside of the track and coasted back to pit road and into the garage, her car listed as "out" by Lap 8 with header problems being given as the reason, giving her the third last-place finish of the season.

Under that same caution, the #32 Pet Dairy Pontiac of Ying Canario began to slow down the backstretch just before the field was able to restart the race as Canario pulled into the garage, his team reporting a piston had broke and with the race almost half out, they decided it was better to call it a day and focus on the next event at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, giving Canario his first finish in the Bottom Five.

The remaining Bottom Five finished the race under power; 40th went to the aforementioned #15 of Chris Kyle, who lost two laps in the final five laps, 39th went to Richmond last-place finisher the #98 Levi Garrett Pontiac of James Stabilito and finishing 38th was the #41 Marvaco Inc. Pontiac of Marcus Saatchi, both of whom who finished one lap down to race winner AJ Jones.
