CUP: Early wreck at Dayton gives Sergeant Young his first career last-place finish

Sergeant Young picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Grand National Series career in last Monday's Race 12 at the Dayton Speedway when his #81 Oldsmobile was involved in a two-car crash after 3 of the 20 laps.

The finish came in his 12th career series start. In the SCRL Grand National Series, it's the 1st for car #81 and the 8th from a crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 5th for the #81 and 291st from a crash.

Young was one of many drivers who was making not only their series debut but league debut by signing up to compete on a full time schedule. Young would make an instant impact, leading 7 laps and scoring his first career win in his SCRL debut at Beach & Road Course. A back-to-back finishes of 7th at Charlotte and Lakeview would prove his talents weren't a fluke before struggling for the first time in his career by finishing 12th at Carrell. His third career 7th place finish at Hillsborough would be followed by a 14th at Arizona before scoring the worst finish of his career, a 29th at North Wilkesboro. A 12th at Martinsville, 16th at Canfield and a 19th at Columbus would be followed by a 10th in the last round at Columbia.

The entry list for the eight time this season would be filled with only the full-time drivers.

In qualifying, Austin Line would score his first career series pole with a time of 18.820 seconds. Young would post a time of 18.832, 0.012 seconds off Line's time, placing him 2nd on the grid. Securing the 22nd and final starting spot was two last-place finisher the #120 Hudson of Brian Grigsby, who posted a time of 19.218 seconds, 0.398 seconds off Line's pole winning time.

When the race started, Grigsby remained in last until the end of Lap 1, when he passed Ty Westmer in the #42 Petty Special Plymouth, 3.412 seconds back of the lead, with that margin growing at the end of Lap 2 as it was 3.941 seconds, when the battle for last came to a sudden end.

After dropping back to third on the first lap, Young was riding around on the high line of the track coming off Turn 4, Young would smack the wall and came down the track, making contact with the #22 Oldsmobile of Chris Kyle, sending Young into the inside of the track and hitting the wall nearly head on. Young would be stuck on the #59 Buesink Police Special Ford of Cole O’Ash and would be punshed into Turn 1 back out in front of traffic, thankfully a majority of the cars would avoid before North Wilkesboro last-place finisher the #92 Plymouth of Andrew James would hit Young's car, creating a bit of a pileup as the #44 of Boston Auston had nowhere to go and slammed into James's car, destroying the front end of his car. Both Young and James would limp their way to the garage, with Young leading the way, and when both drivers would be listed as "out", both had been scored as completing three laps, with Young scored in the final spot.

The remaining Bottom Five would finish on the same lap as the race leaders: 20th was the aforementioned #42 of Ty Westner, 19th was Columbia last-place finisher the #78 Lincoln of Addy Jade and 18th was Canfield last-place finisher the #50 Mercury of Christian Russel.
