TRUCKS: Huge wreck in last laps at Gateway gives Darren Allen the first last-place finish of his career

Darren Allen picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Rainbow Dash Truck Series career in Tuesday's Ram Tough 200 Presented by Pepsi at the Gateway International Raceway when his #99 Exide Batteries Ford was eliminated in a multi-truck accident after 14 of 22 laps.

The finish occurred in his 22nd career series start. In the Truck Series, it's the 3rd for the #99 and the 34th from a crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 15th for the #99 and 267th from a crash.

Entering the fourth ever season of the Truck Series, Allen had never competed in a SCRL sanctioned race, so he was going to have a lot of pressure as he signed a won year contract to drive for Jack Roush and his two truck team, signing on to drive the team's main truck, however he would decide to compete on a part-time schedule. Allen's team would skip the first race at Walt Disney before in his first ever SCRL started, Allen would finish 13th at Homestead, 34th at Phoenix before the team would miss the next three races before coming back to finish 5th at Watkins Glen, 6th at Texas, before in his fourth career start, Allen would win at Bristol. A 36th at Milwaukee, 18th at Nazareth, 22nd at Fontana, 3rd at Pikes Peak, 34th at IRP, 34th at Loudon, 29th at Richmond before finishing 26th in the last round at Memphis.

The entry list for the 14th time this season, and the third race in a row, would be 37 trucks. Nathan Ormond would collect his first career series pole in qualifying, posting a time of 33.965 seconds, while Allen would struggle in qualifying, post a time of 34.661 seconds, 0.696 seconds behind Ormond's pole winning time, placing Allen in 32nd position. Posting the slowest time during qualifying was Memphis last-place finisher the #50 Grainger Ford of Cameron Hathaway, who was 0.978 seconds behind Ormond's lap time.

On race day, Hathaway would trail for the first two turns before he would knock the unsponsored #28 Four-Tech Racing Ford of Jack Lagasee into last, before the next lap around the race's first caution would come out with Loudon last-place finisher the #19 Pennzoil Ford of Chakat Raindancer would take over the final spot on Lap 2. Raindancer would trail the field for two straight laps before two time last-place finisher the #75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet of Joshua Rush would slow due to problems with the engine before he would be forced to pit for repairs. Rush would trail for the next four laps with a truck down on power before Lagasee would take it back again on Lap 9. Lagasee would trail the field for the next five laps before he knocked Flemington last-place finisher the #5 Llumar Window Films Chevrolet of Chakat Whitelion into last place on Lap 14. The next time by the battle for last would come to a crashing hold as Allen would be spun out on the frontstretch before he would be hit by points leader the unsponsored #09 Greenfield Racing Dodge of Season 3 Champion Zachary Fitzwater in the driver's door, sending Allen over for a flip before landing on his roof.

The remaining Bottom Five would all be knocked out by the same wreck; 36th was I-70 last-place finisher the #43 Cummins Engines Dodge of Marcus Saatchi, 35th was the aforementioned #09 of Zachary Fitzwater, 34th was Heartland Park last-place finisher the #22 Red Dog Ford of Riley Spurlytube and 33rd was Portland last-place finisher the #35 Ortho Lawn & Garden Products Chevrolet of Chakat Flaremane.
