Whelen Southern: Late spin and then a broken camshaft gives Jack Marks first last-place finish in night race at Martinsville

Jack Marks picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Snap-On Tools Whelen Southern Series career in the Made In America Whelen 300 at the Martinsville Speedway when his #15 TAS Country Homes Chevrolet fell out with camshaft problems after completing 25 of the the 50 laps.

The finish came in his 6th career start. In the SCRL Snap-On Tools Whelen Southern Series, it's the 1st for car #15 and the 1st for camshaft issues. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 7th for the #15 and 28th for camshaft issues.

Entering Season 1 of the SCRL Snap-On Tools Whelen Southern Series, Jack is a rookie to the SCRL and was joining brother Jim in the Whelen's second highest division run in the southern states of North America. Jack finished 14th in his debut at Caraway, 7th in the second round, a career best third in the third race after leading twelve laps early before finishing 11th in the 4th event at Caraway. In the first ever series event outside of Caraway, Jack finished in 11th spot.

On race day, Jack would roll off starting in the 9th spot while the #4 DMC Auto Exchange Chevrolet of Chase McDowell would roll off in the final spot. McDowell would remain in the final spot for the first six laps before Bowman Gray last-place finisher the #00 G. Lopes Construction Chevrolet of James Stabilito fell back to last on Lap 7 and would remain in last till Lap 10 when Chase regain the final spot briefly before Stabilito took it back on Lap 13 and he was trailing the field on Lap 22 when the battle for the final spot ended.

By this point, Jack had fallen back to 15th spot when entering Turn 1, second Caraway last-place finisher the #14 Motorsports Designs Chevrolet of Trevor Collins made contact with Jack, spinning him out and bringing out the lone caution of the day and knocking Jack back to last. While riding around under caution, Jack's car began to song and the driver quickly pulled his car to the inside of the track and onto pit road and into the garage, the camshaft broken and the car was retired just shortly before the race resumed.

Finishing 19th was the aforementioned #4 of Chase McDowell, the only other driver to not finish on the lead lap, one circuit down to the race leaders.

The remaining Bottom Five were; 18th the #00 of James Stabilito, 17th the #01 Marek Eng. Co. / Holmes and Bahr Chevrolet of Pritti Shah and 16th was the #04 WTQR / Foothill Ford of Joe Jefferson.
