Whelen: Evan Hunter's piston problem prevents him from completing a lap at New Egypt; becomes first driver in series history to fail to complete a lap

Evan Hunter picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series career in last Saturday's Budweiser 150 at the New Egypt Speedway when his #11 Marek Engineering Chevrolet fell out with piston problems without completing any of the 20 laps.

The finish came in his 7th career start. In the SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series, it's the 1st for car #11 and the 1st for piston issues. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 7th for the #11 and the 8th for piston issues.

Entering Season 1 of the SCRL Icebreakers Whelen Series, Hunter had already tasted success having scored two career wins, with his first coming in the SCRL V8 Supercar Series at Lakeside International Raceway over one year ago and his most recent in the Season 1 SCRL CatDog Pro Series East event at the Virginia International Raceway. In his Whelen debut, Hunter finished a disappointing 16th at Thompson, a finish he would repeat in the next round at Martinsville, a position he would do one spot better, a 15th, at Stafford one race later. With only a finish of 15th being his best in the first three races, Hunter came back to Martinsville with redemption, starting first, Hunter would lead 49 of the 50 laps to score win #3. After finishing 13th at the first ever dirt event at New Egypt, win #4 came at Waterford Speedbowl as he led 17 of the 20 laps to become the first ever two time winner in Whelen Series history.

On race day, Hunter would roll off starting in the 20th spot while starting last was Waterford last-place finisher the #1 DMC Auto Exchange Chevrolet of Anthony Lopez. As the cars began to roll off to begin their pace lap, Hunter's car refused to start, stalling on the track. The car was quickly towed back to the garage, where the team discovered that the piston was broken and the car was officially listed as "out" by Lap 3.

The remaining Bottom Five finished on the same lap as the race leaders; 23rd was the #52 Dari-Farms Ice Cream of Patrick Smith, 22nd was the #99 Gearhart Chevrolet of Joshua Rush, 21st was the #0 Stakey's Pumpkins / Jessup Chevrolet of Carter Friesen and finishing 20th was the #28 Fuel Carrier Corp. Chevrolet of Riley Spurlytube.
