CUP: Brian Grigsby trails for the third time in his career at Fort Miami

Brian Grigsby picked up the 3rd last place finish of his SCRL Grand National Series career in last Monday's Race 21 at the Fort Miami Speedway when his #120 Hudson completed all 20 laps under power.

The finish, which came in his 21st career series start, was his first on the circuit since Race 8 at the Martinsville Speedway when he completed all 20 laps under power; 13 races ago. In the SCRL Grand National Series, it's the 3rd for car #120 and the 33rd for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 3rd for the #120 and 354th for running at the finish.

After trailing at Martinsville, Grigsby continued to struggle by finishing 20th the very next round at Canfield, 17th at Columbus, 13th at Columbia, 17th at Dayton, 20th at Carrell, 21st at Grand Rapids, 14th at Bainbridge, 33rd at Heidelberg, 13th at Asheville-Weaverville, 14th at Monroe County, 20th at Altamont-Schenectady before finishing 8th in the last round at Michigan State Fairgrounds.

The entry list for the 15th time this season would be filled with only the full-time drivers, the first time since Altamont-Schenectady Fairgrounds, two races ago. The full-time drivers are not scheduled to return until the 24th race of the season, the Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway.

In qualifying, Austin Line would score his second pole of the season, with a time of 31.306 seconds. Securing the 22nd and final starting spot was Grigsby, who struggled around the half mile track, posting a time of 32.001, 0.695 seconds off Line's time.

When the race started, Grigsby's stay in the final spot was a brief one, knocking second Carrell last-place finisher the #77 Smith-Klein Chevrolet Inc. Ford of McKenzie Dell into last coming out of Turn 2 with Dell trailing for the first circuit. Three more laps would go by with Dell trailing the field before she was able to power her way around Grigsby on the backstretch on Lap 4, knocking him back to last on Lap 5. No one knew it at the time but Lap 5 would be the end for the battle for last, as Grigsby would struggle to keep up with the pack, falling a full second behind the cars in front of him, and finishing a full 12.182 seconds behind the race leaders when the checkered flag waved.

The remaining Bottom Five were: 21st was the aforementioned #77 of McKenzie Dell, 20th was Canfield last-place finisher the #50 Mercury of Christian Russel, 19th was two-time last-place finisher the #60 Plymouth of Josh Barker and 18th was Arizona last-place finisher the #88 Plymouth of Amber Reid.
