ARCA Late Model: Race long battle for the final spot ends with Franz DeVice last at South Boston

Franz DeVice picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL ARCA Late Model Series career in Friday's Season 1 South Boston 200 at the South Boston Speedway when his unsponsored #28 Ford completed all 20 laps under power.

The finish came in his 9th career series start. In the SCRL ARCA Late Model Series, it's the 1st for car #28 and the 9th where the car was still running. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 13th for the #28 and the 257th where the car was still running.

Entering the brand new year of racing, Franz joined his brother Hanz by competing in the ACRA's division fourth lowest division, in a attempt to make a name for himself as well as his brother. Franz would finish 18th in his stock car debut at Toledo, a impressive 4th at Wisconsin, 6th at Elko, 8th at Lanier, 7th at Salem, 19th at Flat Rock, 10th at Nashville before finishing 10th in the last round at Louisville.

In qualifying Richard Torres would score his first career series pole with a time of 17.533, and Franz would post a time that placed him 9th on the grid. But the real story of the day was when a total of seven cars had trouble making it through inspection in time and was never giving a chance to qualify, with none being able to get on track in time, so that meant that the #48 Spray Paint and Equipment Chevrolet of Shannon Lowe, would start last when the race started.

The drop of the green flag would start one of the most competitive battles for the final spot in series history as Lowe would quickly knock the unsponsored #99 Chevrolet of John Norton into last by the backstretch with Norton holding on last till lap 4 when he knocked the #13 Menards Chevrolet of Draco Drakul in last. Draco's stay in the final spot lasted only two laps as he knocked Toledo last-place finisher the #09 Mechanical Services Inc. Pontiac of Jeff Cornils into last on Lap 6, who would hold it for two laps as well before knocking the #24 Lux Enterprises / Pullen Heavy In Chevrolet of Matt McIntyre into last on Lap 8. McIntyre would stay in last for only one lap before he passed John Norton, but just like before, Norton's stay in last was only two laps when he knocked the #097 Dodge Dealers / UAW Dodge of Aisha Pitts into last on Lap 13. Pitts would be determined to not finish last for the first time in her career, and just two laps later would knock DeVice into last for the first time, and as much as he tried to gain a spot over the next five laps around the 0.400 mile short track, DeVice wouldn't and finished last for the first time in his short career.

The remaining Bottom Five were: 19th was the #097 of Aisha Pitts, 18th was the #99 of John Norton, 17th was the #17 Menards Chevrolet of Said Ismail and 16th was the #9 Champion Direct Chevrolet of Tracey Dent.
