CUP: Brent Davison trails for series leading third time in first race at Asheville-Weaverville

Brent Davison picked up the 3rd last place finish of his SCRL Grand National Series career in Saturday's Race 17 at the Asheville-Weaverville Speedway when his #58 Kaiser completed all 20 laps under power.

The finish, which came in his 36th career series start, was his first on the circuit since the Season 2 Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway when his #97 Mercury was involved in a single-car crash without completing any of the 40 laps; 23 races ago. In the SCRL Grand National Series, it's the 1st for car #58 and the 29th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 7th for the #58 and 350th for running at the finish.

Davison was in his second ever full time season competing in the SCRL's highest division in it's NASCAR sanctioned series. Davison had competed in all 19 races, and while he wouldn't visit victory lane, he would score three Top 5 finishes, with a season best of 2nd in his second career start at Charlotte, and would go on to finish 25th in the final point standings. Davison would come back looking for redemption, driving for a brand new team and make, Davison would struggle at the site of his debut one season earlier where he had finished 4th, while this year he's struggle and finished 24th. A 12th at Charlotte would be followed by his second career runner up finish at Lakeview, and a 11th at Carrell, 37th at Hillsborough before scoring his first career win in just his 25th career start by winning at Arizona State Fairgrounds. A 9th at North Wilkesboro was followed by a disappointing 13th at Martinsville, before scoring win number two at Canfield, a 4th at Columbus, 6th at Columbia, 11th at Dayton, 16th at the second Carrel event, 12th at Grand Rapids, before scoring his third win of the season at Bainbridge before finishing 30th in the last round at Heidelberg.

The entry list for the twelfth time this season would be filled with only the full-time drivers.

In qualifying, Christian Russel would score his fifth pole of his career with a time of 21.103 seconds. Securing the 22nd and final starting spot was Davison, who struggled around the half mile track, posting a time of 21.528, 0.425 seconds off Russel's time.

When the race started, Davison would trail for the first lap before knocking the #100 of Jeff Stott back to last on Lap 2, a position that Stott would hold for the next two circuits before knocking the #82 of Breezy Brisbane into last on Lap 5. Brisbane's stay in the final spot would last only one lap as she knocked Arizona last-place finisher the #88 Rocket Oldsmobile of Amber Reid into last on Lap 6. Reid would struggle around the half mile dirt track, trailing for the next five laps before knocking Brisbane back to last for a second time on Lap 12. Brisbane this time would trail for two laps before knocking Charlotte last-place finisher the #8 Fry Motors Lincoln of Chris Tuckett into last on Lap 15. Tuckett would trail for three laps before knocking Davison back to last on Lap 18, and as much as Davison tried to gain a position over the final laps, he was unable to do so by the time the checkered flag waved.
