CART: Late race crash at Phoenix gives Derek Greene his second last-place finish of the season; Danyal Gitirokh wins SCRLASTCAR Championship

Derek Greene picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL CART Series career in Monday's Miller High Life 150 at the Phoenix International Raceway when his #14 Pepto-Bistol entry was eliminated in a multi-car accident after 29 of 32 laps.

The finish, which came in his 14th career start, was his first on the circuit since the Trenton Twin Indy #1 at the Trenton Speedway when he completed all 20 laps under power; 9 races ago. In the CART Series, it's the 2nd for the #14 and the 6th from a crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 9th for the #14 and 274th from a crash.

After trailing for the first time in his CART career, Greene finishing 27th in the second twin Trenton race, 13th and 19th in the twin Michigan races, 13th at the series's first road course event at Watkins Glen, 23rd at the third Trenton race, 24th at Ontario, 5th in the third Michigan race before finishing 24th in the last round at Atlanta after being caught up in the Big One on Lap 3.

In qualifying, Chakat Duskwatcher scored the first pole of hir CART career with a time of 26.968 seconds, while Greene would fair decently in qualifying, posting a time of 27.089, only 0.121 seconds off Duskwatchers's pole, placing Greene 16th. Posting the slowest time in qualifying was the #4 entry of Joe Jefferson, who would struggle to find speed, as he posted a time of 27.215 seconds, 0.247 seconds behind Duskwatchers's pole winning time.

On race day, Jefferson would trail for the first two turns before knocking the #01 entry of Trey Wright into last on the backstretch, as Wright would trail for the first lap before knocking second Atlanta last-place finisher the #18 Miller entry of Jack Lagasee to last on lap 2. Lagasee would trail for two laps before knocking Wright back into last on Lap 4, but Wright's stay in last would only last one lap as he knocked the #87 entry of Chase Miller into last on Lap 5. Miller would trail for two laps before knocking the #11 entry of Marcus Saatchi into last on Lap 7. Saatchi would remain in last for two laps before knocking Miller back to last on Lap 9. Miller would struggle around the one mile track for the next several laps, remaining in last until Lap 16 when he knocked second Michigan last-place finisher the #54 Atari entry of Carol Dent into the final spot. Dent would trail for the next eight laps before passing Miller once again for last as Miller would trail for the next five laps and was trailing when the battle for last ended.

While running in 18th, Indy last-place finisher the #2 Coppertone entry of Mairin Tayami suffered a tire problem entering Turn 1 and would slow entering Turn 1, while trying to move out of the way, drivers tried their best to miss the slowing car but wasn't fast enough as the #19 entry of David Byers would clip Tayami and sent her for a spin right in front of the field as first Phoenix last-place finisher the #98 Miller entry of Al Lagasee had nowhere to go and slammed into Tayami as well as Greene and the #26 entry of Chad Myers as both Greene and Myers would be unable to drive back to the pits, with both cars being scored having completed 29 laps and would be listed as "out" by Lap 31.

For Tayami, she was towed back to the pits and her team repaired the car as best they could before sending her back out onto the track, one lap behind the race leaders when the checkered flag waved, finishing 31st, the lone car one lap down.

The remaining Bottom Five would finish on the same lap as the race leaders; 30th was the aforementioned #11 of Marcus Saatchi and 29th was the #87 of Chase Miller.

Due to Derek Greene finishing last, that instantly gave the Season 1 SCRL CART Series SCRLASTCAR Driver's Championship to Danyal Gitirokh, who won the championship by one Bottom Five finish over Greene. Gitirokh had two last-place finishes on the season, at the first Michigan and third Atlanta race.

The Season 1 SCRL CART Series Championship went to Riley Spurlytube, the first in his SCRL career. Spurlytube had one last-place finish in the season coming at Watkins Glen. Congratulations to Spurlytube for having a great year and making history in the SCRL.
