CART: Early crash at Trenton gives Samet Ozkan his first-place finish of the season

Samet Ozkan picked up the 1st last place finish of his SCRL CART Series career in Thursday's Ditzler 150 at the Trenton Speedway when his #24 Charlotte Hornets entry was eliminated in a two-car accident after 2 of 10 laps.

The finish came in his 10th career start. In the CART Series, it's the 1st for the #24 and the 4th from a crash. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 16th for the #24 and 272nd from a crash.

Entering the first ever season of the SCRL's newest series, Ozkan had found some success in the SCRL, having found victory lane for times in his career and was still looking for his first ever SCRL Championship. Ozkan would finish a respectable 17th in his first start at Phoenix, a 7th at the first Atlanta race and a 5th in the second Atlanta event. Back-to-back 4th place finishes at Indy and the first Trenton events would be followed with his worst finish of the season so far a 32nd at the second Trenton race after crashing out early. A 11th and 31st at the twin Michigan races would be followed by a 7th on the twisting and demanding Watkins Glen road course.

Point leader Riley Spurlytube would score the first pole of his CART career with a time of 35.973 seconds, while Ozkan wouldn't be too far behind, posting a time of 36.186, only 0.213 behind Spurlytube's time. Starting last by posting the slowest time in qualifying was the #01 entry of Trey Wright, who posted a time of 36.690, 0.717 seconds behind Spurlytube's pole winning time.

On race day, Wright would trail for the first lap when Ozkan, who was battling for 6th was tapped from behind by the #23 ABC entry of Easton Meyers entering Turn 1, sending Ozkan up the track and into the #30 BP entry of Titus Marciniak, sending both cars up the track and into the wall, with Ozkan flipping several times before landing on all four wheels. Amazingly, Ozkan was able to drive away, but would pull behind the wall once he got to pit lane, the car being listed as 'out' by the 5th circuit.

The remaining Bottom Five would finish on the same lap as the race leaders; 32nd was the #97 Mountain Dew entry of Dilan Ebrahimian, 31st was first Michigan last-place finisher the #33 Ikea entry of Danyal Gitirokh, 30th was first Atlanta last-place finisher the #1 Doritos entry of Casey Nanako and 29th was the aforementioned #01 of Trey Wright.
