CUP: Chris Kyle trails in caution free race at Dayton; now tied with Nick Kennedy and Cole with second most last-place finishes in a career

Chris Kyle picked up the 2nd last place finish of his SCRL Grand National Series career in the March 16 Race 29 at the Dayton Speedway when his #22 Hudson completed all 20 laps under power.

The finish, which came in his 48th career series start, was his first on the circuit since the Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway when he fell out with header problems after completing 23 of the 40 laps; 5 races ago. In the SCRL Grand National Series, it's the 2nd for car #22 and the 40th for running at the finish. Across all the series in the SCRL, it's the 19th for the #22 and 361st for running at the finish.

After trailing at Darlington and getting no points, Kyle would rebound in the next round at Columbia, finishing 11th, before struggling to finish 16th at Central City, rebounding with back-to-back finishes of at 5th at Langhorne and Charlotte.

The entry list for the 21st time this season would be filled with only the full-time drivers, with the part-time drivers not making an appearance since Langhorne; 2 races ago.

In qualifying, Cole O'Ash would score his third career pole, with a time of 21.022 seconds. Kyle would fair decent around the bumpy half mile track, posting a time of 21.308 seconds, 0.286 seconds behind O'Ash, placing Kyle 10th on the starting line up. Securing the 22nd and final starting spot was Canfield last-place finisher the #50 Mercury of Christian Russel, who posted a time of 21.671 seconds, 0.649 seconds behind O'Ash's time.

When the race started, Russel would struggle to keep up with the field at first, trailing for the first two circuits before finally getting a handle on his car, knocking two-time last-place finisher the #92 Fabulous Hudson Hornet Hudson of Andrew James into last on Lap 3. James would find it difficult to pass much like Russel had, trailing for the next two laps before knocking three-time last-place finisher the #81 Ford of Sergeant Young into last on Lap 6. Young would struggle as well, trailing for four laps before knocking two-time last-place finisher the #69 Oldsmobile of Chakat Duskwatcher to last on Lap 11.

Duskwatcher's stay in the final spot lasted only two laps as she knocked current SCRLASTCAR leader the #120 Hudson of Brian Grigsby into last on Lap 13. Grigsby was determined to not trail for the fourth time in his career, as he stay in the final spot lasted only two last before knocking Air Base last-place finisher the #82 Oates Motor Co. Hudson of Breezy Brisbane into last on Lap 15. Brisbane would trail for only two circuits before he knocked two-time last-place finisher the #60 Plymouth of Josh Barker into last on Lap 17. Entering the white flag, Barker still held down the final spot, but entering Turn 1, Barker made his move and knocked Kyle back to last, with Kyle unable to make a move over the final quarter mile, he trailed only the final lap when the checkered flag waved.
